Laser Operator
SUMMARY
Entry to mid-level, with a minimum of 1 to 2 years’ experience operating CNC tube or flat lasers. Has understanding of programming lasers in so much as writing basic programs. Works with minimal supervision and has a focused responsibility maintaining up time and quick change-overs. Maintains a focus on quality and throughput. Reports directly to the Senior Operations Engineer, with a dotted line to the Plant Manager.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Operate the CNC laser and other machinery used in the production process, or assist other machine operators. Laser operation includes, but is not limited to:
o Select and set up lenses based on material type and thickness, load programs and set machine parameters to ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
o Calling up cut condition based on material thickness.
o Coping a cut condition and editing if needed to ensure best quality cut (feed rate, focus, power, gas pressure).
o Centering the beam through the nozzle.
· Perform material handling functions, including loading material for job runs, and take away of finished product. Duties will include crane operation.
· Measure completed work pieces to verify conformance. Includes First Piece Inspection at every initial run, plus 30 minute checks.
· Read work orders to determine specifications, such as materials to be used, location and size of holes and obrounds, cutting lines, and all pertinent dimensions and tolerances.
· Maintain equipment, including tooling and area cleanliness. Maintenance includes empty bottom tray of laser, empty dust collector, changing 12pk gas tanks, and cleaning the lens.
· Suggests and assists the Senior Operations Engineer in integrating new or improved programming and equipment.
· Available for additional time as needed to ensure 2nd shift has a thorough understanding of the current run and expectations.
· Keeps manager informed of issues should it impact quality or productivity.
· Is a critical liaison with the plant manager, maintenance manager and quality manager, ensuring equipment and uptime is maintained.
· Maintains inventory required of laser, ensuring critical spare parts are available at all times.
· Reports directly to the Senior Operations Engineer, attending Operations Meetings as requested.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
· Has knowledge of basic and advanced laser programming.
· Basic knowledge of G-code is a plus.
· Knowledge of LOTO.
· Has a working knowledge of shop floor processes as it relates to metal fabrication, along with documentation of same in the ERP system.
· Knowledge of company standards, policies, manufacturing practices and manufacturing capabilities.
· Ability to exercise own initiative and judgment.
· Gets along well with peer group and shop floor associates and fosters a positive culture. Must exercise an intolerance of any prejudicial behavior.
· Capable of presenting progress of tasks to the Senior Operations Engineer and peer group.
· Assists in the creation of lean manufacturing projects as it pertains to the CNC laser.
· Works very well with all disciplines of the company.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
· Education and/or Experience: 1 to 2 years’ experience minimum with CNC lasers.
· Language Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with operators and inter/intra departmental associates. Spanish in addition to English is a plus.
· Operating System: Must have a working comprehension of the operating system as it pertains to looking up parts and documenting work completed.
· Reasoning Ability: A thorough knowledge of basic and advanced laser principles, with the requirement to identify poor quality cuts and burn through.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, steel toe work boots, and hardhats. Work may require travel. Work may require evening and weekend work. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
